New Years (HVAC) Resolutions

It’s New Year’s resolution time again! Whether you want to lose weight, spend more time with family, or save money, New Years is a magical time where anything seems possible. But somehow the initial momentum for change fades with time (and usually not much time at all!). What if you could channel that momentum into making changes TODAY that last the entire year? Here’s a checklist of what you can do right now to save money and have a healthier home in 2018.

1. Check air flow

What you need: 10 minutes and a dusting cloth

Pay a quick visit to each vent in your home. Check for obstructions like furniture, rugs, and toys, then give each vent a quick dusting. Commit to checking vents every month to be sure the air that your HVAC system is working so hard to heat or cool is actually making it into your home.

2. Change air filters

What you need: air filters and a permanent marker

If it has been a while since you last changed your filters (or if you don’t remember when the last time was) go ahead and change them right now. Clean air filters are a great way to start out the new year plus you can now easily schedule your 3 month changes for Easter, July 4th, Halloween, and next New Year’s day. Label your filters with the date they need to be changed and stick them in a visible place. You can also go the extra mile and set reminders using your smartphone right now so you won’t forget!

3. Program your thermostat

What you need: programmable thermostat

If you aren’t making use of your programmable thermostat, now’s the time! Here’s an example schedule that you can use as a template and adjust to your preferences… just remember that the smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the lower your overall heating bill will be.

  • 6am-8am: 68°
  • 8am-4:30pm: 63°
  • 4:30pm-9pm: 65°
  • 9pm-6am: 63°

4. Schedule regular maintenance

What you need: a calendar and a telephone

If you don’t do anything else on this list, do this! Regular maintenance is the number one way to protect your investment in your HVAC system. Use your smartphone or calendar to set a date for Fall and Spring maintenance. Call Valley Air Conditioning to schedule your maintenance OR set up a Comfort Care-365 Agreement with us and we will call you and schedule both of these yearly visits.

5. Improve indoor air quality

What you need: indoor plants

On your next trip to any home improvement store, pick up some indoor plants for a cheap way to filter your air naturally. You should also periodically air out your home on sunny winter days to release the build-up of pollutants from cleaners, cooking, and fragrance sprays. Commit to airing out your home once a week and be sure to crack a window and turn on an exhaust fan when you use cleaners.
